A Look Back Into My Future

The story of the artwork on exhibit actually starts around 1988 during my final years at high school in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It was here I made the decision to go to York University in Toronto, encouraged by my art teacher and supported by my family, to study visual arts. Around the same time I was being introduced to a new type of music thru the Detroit radio shows of The Wizard (AKA Jeff Mills) and Duane ‘In-The-Mix’ Bradley. While The Wizard would play a scorching mash-up of techno, house, industrial and disco, Dwayne would play a thoughtful smooth mix of house music on his “midday” mixes as well as his weekend shows. These shows became a daily ritual for my brother Richard and I, igniting a passion for house and techno music and setting us both on career paths involving and pursuing creativity.

PARALLELS

Symmetry, futurism, bleeding edges, infinitely repetitive layers, contrasting textures and hidden messages. These words that describe Canadian artist Matthew Hawtin’s paintings, prints and sculpture could easily apply to the music made by his brother, techno producer Richie Hawtin. It’s in this solo exhibition, showcasing some of the art Matthew has made in conjunction with his brother’s record labels Plus 8 Records and Minus Records, that we can see the parallels between the two mediums.

Long-standing Nightlife Editor at Time Out Magazine, Dave Swindells gives you a unique insight into the Second Summer of Love, a period in 1988-89 when electronic dance music exploded on the youth scene in Britain.
His latest exhibition, ‘Spirit of Ibiza 89’, focuses on how ‘Balearic Beats’ – an eclectic cocktail of rock, Chicago house, Eurodisco, and funky reggae – and the ecstasy-fuelled clubbing lifestyle experienced in Ibiza inspired DJs to create a more freestyle and egalitarian club scene in London, albeit in dark, smoke-filled and strobe-lit basements.
With this series of images Dave Swindells shows the nightlife of Ibiza in the late ‘80s, with its open-air dance floors for those hot Mediterranean nights, drawing a polysexual, all-ages crowd in an easy-going hippie-inspired atmosphere which was nonetheless self-consciously stylish (unlike many of the dressed-down Brits).

As part of the 10th Anniversary of the opening in Ibiza of the legendary Es Vive hotel {ourhistory} is proud to announce the opening of “Spirit of Ibiza 89” an exhibition that gives a unique insight on how Balearic beats changed the face of music and life on this much loved  Island. The exhibition is from the collection of photographs taken in Ibiza by the long standing Time Out Clubbing Editor Dave Swindells.

Dave has photographed the nightlife scene in London and beyond since 1984, as well as writing about it extensively as Nightlife Editor at Time Out from 1986-2009. I have documented countless different scenes (well, OK, that's an exaggeration, but put it this way, I'm still counting) and his photographs have been featured in i-D, The Face, The Observer, Mixmag and many other publications worldwide as well as Time Out.
